Biography
Bethan Harries joined the Institute of Political and Economic Governance (IPEG) in 2007 as a research assistant. She graduated from the University of Bradford with an MA in Peace Studies in 2004 and went on to work on research projects for public bodies such as the Learning and Skills Council and Sure Start. Previously, Bethan worked as an immigration lawyer and as an adviser on refugee integration.
Bethan recently completed a project funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation which looked at the housing aspirations of white British and south Asian second generation women. The study, Housing aspirations for a New Generation: perspectives from white and south Asian British women examines what women want from housing and how they expect to fulfil their aspirations – in relation to tenure, location, neighbourhood type and mixing – and questions whether there are differences between ethnic groups. The report is due to be published by JRF and the Chartered Institute of Housing in June 2008.
Bethan also continues to work occasionally as an international election observer for the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
Research interests:
Bethan’s main areas of interest are in ethnicity, migration, young people and community engagement and community cohesion.
