Project summary
An empirical project that will use national data for all local authorities on economic and social indicators over a ten year period to analyse why some places do well and other places less well. The work will focus in on policy levers available to local government. We will be using a method developed in the USA, and will have good links to those US academics. After analysing the data, we will follow up with NW case studies to look in more detail at what special factors are at work, and what policies could be used by local government in partnership to bring struggling areas nearer to the average.
Within this project we will explore what are the implications for governance structures at a regional and sub-regional level, based on the data and case studies. This would include a discussion about the role of city-regions, and managing implications of city-regions such as uneven distribution of resources.
