The Principles of Governance: Corporate & Political
Professor Gerry Stoker began work on an ESRC Professorial Fellowship in January 2004 and will continue until December 2007.
The research aims to enhance debates about governance that have taken place in different disciplines of social science and in distinctive sectors of society and economy. Governance arrangements - the organisation of collective decision-making - can make a defining contribution to the effectiveness and accountability of organisations. Moving beyond practitioner debates and the established literature, this research will develop a new theoretical synthesis identifying principles of governance drawing on various forms of institutional theory. These theories will then be used to audit the practice of organisations from a variety of sectors. Thereafter, the unfolding of governance arrangements at the cutting edge of new public/private partnerships in public service delivery will be explored. More generally the outcomes of the research will be used to enlighten governance debates in both public and private sectors.
