Project summary
One of the tasks of the North West Improvement Network (NWIN) Knowledge Creation programme is to accumulate and assimilate existing relevant international and national research, learning and knowledge. This review of the existing evidence seeks to aid local public sector agencies through a review of the possibilities and challenges involved in moving towards decentralised provision and governance; and linking such neighbourhood governance with local and national levels of decision making and activity. The findings will cover four main sections:
- Possibilities: Rationales for enhancing community participation in the development and governance of public services;
- Criteria for good local governance;
- Challenges and options;
- A strategic way forward.
The evidence review is extremely topical in the light of the local government white paper, and draws on relevant Government material, and leading policy-relevant academic material.
There is currently much interest in neighbourhood devolution and neighbourhood governance. Researchers in IPEG have done previous work on the possibilities for neighbourhood governance , including how frontline councillors can play an enhanced role.
