The Centre for Local Governance (CfLG) was set up by The University of Manchester and the North West Improvement Network (NWIN) - a network which enables the North West's 46 local authorities, 5 fire and rescue authorities and the Lake District National Park Authority to share knowledge and good practice.

With nearly £8million worth of finance from the Department for Communities and Local Government (Department for Communities and Local Government) and academic support from the University, NWIN aims to put learning, improvement and innovation at the heart of local government and create a Region of Excellence.

The aim is to identify needs and develop capacity in a number of new and stimulating ways, using existing talent and expertise to drive improvement across the public sector.
