The Institute for Political and Economic Governance (IPEG) at the University of Manchester is working with the Centre for Citizenship and Democracy at the University of Southampton on an ESRC funded research programme ‘Rediscovering the Civic and Achieving Better Outcomes in Public Policy’. It is a new extensive research project on what causes civic behaviour and what its impact is. Our aim is to investigate the most effective ways to encourage active citizenship.
In the best traditions of applied social science, our research aims to be methodologically innovative and to use the experimental method to test out the interventions public authorities can use to stimulate civic engagement.
It is a multi project enterprise to include the following-
- Analysis of existing survey data to understand the civic-outcome
- A deliberative intervention
- Design experiments
- Randomised Control Trials
